David’s Family Trip (November 2019)

We spent a fantastic four weeks with Robin in November 2019 sailing south from St Lucia to the beautiful Union Island and Tobago Cays and then back up north past Dominica to the Iles des Saintes just south of Guadeloupe.

Despite copious reading up beforehand we wouldn’t have been able to do this without Robin’s intimate knowledge and know-how of the area on all the best bays and anchorages to visit.

I was looking for a trip to spend quality time with different members of my family and partner, to share Caribbean life and give them a chance to experience sailing first hand. We spilt the trip into two weeks.

The first two weeks were with my brother, in-laws and son.

We are all into water-sports so we headed down to Union Island to enjoy the great kitesurfing conditions its so famous for. On the way we stopped at Bequia for paddle boarding, snorkelling and hiking, we then enjoyed a lovely sail over to the exclusive Mustique, followed by the little known but beautiful island of Mayreau and the Tobago Cays.

It was great fun sailing through all types of weather from Caribbean blue to sudden squalls, all the time Robin on hand to oversee and keep us safe. For the second fortnight we met my partner back in St Lucia and headed up to Martinique for scuba-diving and more fantastic snorkelling.

Meeting Robin’s friends and hiking on Dominica was a highlight. We discovered beautiful waterfalls, hidden valleys and stopped for more diving and snorkelling. Champagne Reef in Dominica was a truly amazing place to discover. With bubbles of gas pushed through the rock due to the thermal springs meeting the sea under the reef.

We had it all to ourselves and travelling this way enabled us to keep well off the tourist trail and chose where to drop anchor as and when we wanted. We then headed North to Iles des Saints’ for yet more diving before heading back south to Rodney Bay in St Lucia for a last couple of days of kitesurfing.

We highly recommend Robins as an extremely knowledgeable Captain and sailor. He understands the fine line of when to be around to guide and pass on his local knowledge and when to step back and just let us discover the area on our own terms.

Shadow is a fantastic Catamaran. We spent hours lazing around enjoying the passing scenery, sunbathing on deck or snoozing on the trampoline.

We all learned a lot about sailing and navigation. We know that we’ll be back again as soon as we all can to learn and discover more, there is plenty to do and see in the Caribbean and travelling by boat gets is the best way.
